Since there was a lot on discussion on this recently (in a thread somewhere) i decided we should settle this in a poll! (Yeah, yeah, i know some of you don't like polls, but i will try to make it as unbiased as possible :D)

I would go for both. It would show that you're a good consistent player but also can adapt to new situations. And not having the same maps all the time would spice things up a bit i think personally. Some people don't like playing on the same maps all the time after all.

custom-made maps but from a large pool with some variety (3 size 400-500 maps is not variety just because they are on a different biome)

I think if the pool is large enough then only custom made ones is ok: but we're talking 20-30 maps for avid 1v1 players not to get bored of them.

I'd rather have random symmetrical ones to fill the gap before Uber can make more custom ones than be stuck playing the same 3 over and over.

Alternatively, if there are gonna be 'seasons' implemented, (maybe the winner of each 1v1 season could get a custom comm that cannot be achieved any other way?) then smaller numbers of custom maps would be fine eg. play 8 maps for 3 months or whatever, then next season you get a completely new selection of say 8 maps to play on. Keeps things fresh and spreads the workload for uber when making the maps.

a pool with 100 systems, many 1 planet, some with moons, some with twin planets, and naval planets and island planets and big planets and small planets and lava planets and metal planets and ice planets and desert planets and lumpy planets and planets with many ruins and planets with many mountains and planets that are part water, part land, and planets that have great choke points, and planets with many mettle spots and planets with few metal spots and planets that have many trees and planets that have no trees, then also planets with some trees, oh and also planets with platues and canyons and natural bridges and planets that have a smiley face on them, and planets with large lakes in them, and planets that have many small lakes in them, and planets that have rivers in them, and planets with moons that can be used for planet smashing, and other planets that are metal that can annihilazer those moons, and planets with moons that have alot of metal, and planets with moons that have little to no metal, and planets that are close to the sun, and other planets that are far away from the sun, and planets that have oval like orbits around the sun, and planets that are just COOL! PLANETS PLANETS PLANETS!

the pool of 100 systems would be like many coming from the community picked by uber (since community is great at making maps, srry uber, but uber is good at weeding out the troll systems) and then some 10 maps from uber so that they will feel better. =) also, the ability to veto 50 maps, so that matiz can always stick with those larger systems

    no...im saying....

    :p

in reality, what i mean is a wide variety of planets to pick and choose from, and half of those systems we can veto, to give a lot of power to the players in what WE want to do =)

OMG WTH?! randomy gen symetric TWO VOTES?

I thought this was the feature everyone was super stoked about?

    community! activate! fix this now.

Procedural symetic is a flippin awesome way of tackling mapmemo and spawnkill in PA while also providing a solution to unfair and imbalanced maps.

I think you guys should view this again :

Yes but you want all those systems to be custom made? I'm talking within the confines of the poll here, technically you could have all those systems made with randomly generated symmetricals with no custom maps at all.

i always liked the diversity which comes with procedurally generated maps in PA.
But soon we will have a few maps in which only 1 strategy will win, and it's all about who can make this one strategy as fast as possible... :(

I personally would *love* to see a tournament held entirely on *randomly generated* symmetrical maps, that no players get to see before the event. The way it would work- the tournament officiator would generate a new map *on stream* live to viewers (allowing for adjustments to get something interesting). This is then shared to the players. New map each round.

I'm tempted to organise this as an event if people would be interested?

They should be custom made by the community, we can hold contests and stuff like "best planet system with main planet navy focused with large islands, + moon) that sorta thing, can be small, quick and automated if we want, and just add that system in, as well as vote the *worst* system out, while adding 2 in! =D more and more systems for betterness while weeding out the chaf o_O

I voted "Both" because I think, at the current stage of development, custom-made maps should be the primary component of the map pool (someone having thought and designed these maps with a precise idea of the kind of strategies are favoured for it, hence ensuring diversity) but, at the same time, I believe having one random map in the pool (being symmetrical and of varying radius and number of mex within some reasonable limits) will content the majority of players. In this way given a pool of N maps (arguably N must be around something like 8-14 for each competitive season) the probability of playing in a randomised (but fair) map is 1/N. If, on top of this, we add a 1-map-veto system we could have the ideal map pool, in my opinion.

I think learning and adapting to the terrain as you go makes things more competitive. A set map pool, no matter how large, will eventually become known and then stagnant, with only a few standout maps that anyone likes. At least, that's usually what happens.

Because of the lack of good maps provided i started to join random lobbys instead. Its amazing what kind of random systems people create so i gues i just keep playing that because the game can do somuch more then what the ubermaps show you.
