How so? Macro is essentially just managing economy and telling a unit to "go somewhere" or to "attack".

But game play would devolve into just saying "go there" or "attack that"

Without aaaany other player interaction. (Other than managing economy and such)

I find it a little overwhelming and I know I haven't reached my max (i can do better in FA) but I rather be putting my clicks into eco and such like i do on PA rather than army management.

In PA you don't give a s hit about eco, in a 8 min match (wich is all 1v1 ever lasts nowadays anyways (except for that one, out of the ordinary replay I posted)) you have more than enough eco to go for the kill early on.

and any unit that hasn't received an order in the last second is as good as dead.

    that's SUCH bullshit!

units should have a minute capability to fend for themselves and a tiny survivability of sorts like they do in FA, not NONE at all!

    I can't DO shi t like stutterstep and I don't want to.

Honestly when you market "grand scale RTS", that's not what people think.

Anyone have an actual definition of micro? It seems like a very variable thing that is not really representing anything, just the average time in between actions.

Have you even ever played any classic strategic games? Hell, it's a lot harder if you can't make ANY ground by babysitting, and you just have to realize that your one, simple attack command - was just the biggest mistake you've ever made and there is nothing left to do because your units are already in battle and you can't cheat them out.

It doesn't have to be tiny, micro is tactics, macro is strategy.

    uhg....

mirco isn't tactics. micro concerns a single or a small group of units. period.

go from there to define it however you want.

I've played a lot of TA, which was quite the micro-oriented game. Not to mention Starcraft.

I don't know. You are talking about combat movements. Again, there are a lot of arcade shooters like Mobas and RenX and arena shooters and stuff, that focus on intensively controlling combat units with precision mid-battle.

I am talking about base building and mass army production and producing the right type of units and in the right order to tackle another unpredictable enemy who is capable of building any number of stuff.

Two different kinds of tactics and strategy, but I don't want one outside of RenX and arena shooters. I wouldn't mind a macro strategy shooter though, where gunplay is simple and limited but strategic decisions on type versus type and position and goal is the objective.

    um yes it is?

Micro, stemming from the root micro-management. Which means management of anything on a small scale. To define small, you need to define big. Tactics is by definition the small scale of strategy.

Many people wrongly assume that macro = economy and micro = small squad of unit control because these concepts overlap the most often. Basically it's not wrong to refer to macro when talking about economy etc. but these terms have fundamentally wider definitions.

For example, you can micro your economy.

There are also micro intensive build orders. For example in brood war without multiple building selection, if you wanted to do a bio build requiring 6 to 8 barracks pumping marines ever 20 seconds, you had to go back to your base more often than with other builds.

all of that stuff I hate.

FAF has been purged from eco micro entirely. we have a mod that turns mass fabs on and off for you faster than the l33test l33t that ever l33ted

I don't think he is talking about absolute elimination of micro, I think he is referring to things like dox stutter step which I don't believe adds anything to the game. This game is about grand strategy, not individual micro of unit groups.

The problem with APM-rewarding/-focused RTS is that most of the actual gameplay consists of playing out memorised patterns, whereas strategising is relegated to inbetween matches. But inbetween games is not, well, enough for a strategy game. At least in my book.
