A simple poll; When all is lost and it's clear you're not going to win, all your gambits are exhausted, and the game's been going on for too damn long... how do you bow out?

    More importantly, however, there are some discussions to be had about surrender;
-Does the client's lack of "logout = surrender" force players to drudge through to a boring victory?
-Does the very concept of surrender countermand the game's prime directive, planet-smashing?
-Where does one draw the line between "hopeless" and "underdog"?

Deleting the commander ends the game immediately and is considered much more polite than just leaving. I won't call quitting without deleting impolite, but mostly because not everybody is aware of the delete key.

Quitting without deleting can easily be mistaken for a crash and many players will just pause and wait for the opponent to come back.

The first thing we teach new guys here in the Realm are our tricks for keeping games concise. This is one of them: Delete your comm if you are leaving. For the love of God.

As long as you aren't one of those assholes who patrols their commander in an astreus between planets, taunts you a bit while setting up the patrol, telling you exactly what they are doing and then saying "have fun!" and leaving.

A self destruct is the only proper way to surrender. Your opponent shouldn't have to wait 12 minutes for you to die or spend 5 minutes trying to kill you when the game has already been won.

Well on very rare occasions I might delete my com. Generally though I'm a 'fight to the end' type player :p you really should have that option.

It's surprising how often you can turn around games that appear to be a lost cause....

I disagree to an extent. There is an issue with many of the 1 v 1 players giving up way to easily.... Also it's not unreasonable to expect your opponent to have to come and finish the job. If they can't kill your commander then the game isn't decided.

What is unreasonable is things like using an orbital transport bug to prevent the game ending when it should, but that is a different matter.

I'm not overly impressed though with players who get raided and declare gg in the first 5 mins. Why even bother playing?

If you surrender, you delete your commander. Surrendering is saying "okay, I lost".
I am not sure what happens if you return to main menu via the ingame menu.
Is your commadner self destructed when you log out of the running game? Is your spot taken over by an AI?

Ragequitting via Alt+F4 - hell no.
You use Alt+F4 only if you have some UI bug that F5 cannot fix and want to rejoin as soon as your computer is able too. For the server Alt+F4 is indistinguishable from a crash right now*. So it will keep your spot open add inifnitium.

*The client could be modified to at least send a "Quit by user" info before closing. But then ragequitters would just use the task manager to quit it. And at worst the closing of the client might be delayed (a bad case for Alt+F4).

If you do anything but self destruct your commander you're a jerk by waisting your opponent's time.

I ragequit, but not by using ALT+F4... no... I throw my computer out the window from the third floor. Without opening the window first, of course.

No, really... I never surrender! :p

Usually the delete key. Though I have to admit in some cases in the past I used the 4th option:

ALT+F4 is way not drastic enough ;)

Honestly, I prefer doing a final attack with my comm and whatever other units I have to a simple self-destruct. Ends the game with a bang.

Depends if you agree that you have lost, or if your opponent is just assuming that you have already lost and wants you to quit.

If you have fully lost, delete your com.

If you haven't then fight on.

I usually plat team games, if i feel that victory is a lost cause, I call the GGs and just exit the game cause the rest of the team might wanna still try beating the odds.

In FFAs i just keep fighting until u kill me, cause, for me, it is symbol of respect to your opponent not to just roll over and die, but to give him the fight of his life, making my defeat more enjoyable.

I generally consider it important to give my opponents the enjoyment of blowing up my com themselves; I enjoy the fight itself as much as the win or loss, though I draw the line at astreus-patrolling and other nonsense. I also dislike abandoning team games without a team-wide consensus that we are surrendering.

But when I do surrender, I do try to remember to thank my opponent for a well-played and enjoyable game - which it generally is. Then I delete my com.
