We need modifier keys that force selection of a certain type of unit (bot, vehicle, air, naval, orbital) when making a selection. Also need the same thing, but for fabbers.

If you're fully zoomed out looking at a planet, an you just want to seleclt some orbital units, yo uneed to be able to hold down the appropriate key before dragging your selection box over the desired units. And thus select only the type of unit you want. Ideally you could hold down multiple keys to select, say, all vehicles and bots but not air units.

I cannot stress enough how much I want these two features!

The first doea exist ingame. Check your hotkey settings... the fact that I had no idea it existed until i did so is yet another "WE NEED A PROPER TUTORIAL" flag.

You're going to have to give me more detail than that, I've spent quite a long time going through all off the settings and making sure I was familiar with anything that looked useful. I've not noticed any 'select only bots' kind of hotkeys? There's a hot key for idle fabbers but not to force selection of fabbers (e.g. i want to select that one bot fabber in the middle of a group of dox).

I would be interested to know how you efficiently manage your orbital units when things get crowded.

Do you maybe rotate the planet so that you can view the orbital units separately?

That is the only way to "handle" it and it is so bad, I don't play orbital because of it.
Seriously an option for this blur stuff + "do not select units that are blurred" would be soooo helpful.

How about making the non-orbital units greyed out like in Civ: BE instead of ugly blurs?

If you remove the color you can't tell who owns the unit?

Yeah well... If you blur it you can't tell what unit it is.

    BOOM.

This. I absolutely hate orbital the way it is currently because the interaction is so flawed. I basically stopped using it entirely unless absolutely necessary.
This is also one reason during galactic war I always choose the system with fewest planets possible when choosing a new attack target.

Yea I thought this was a perfect solution when it was implemented.
There was even a slight middle zoom where all icons were seen and everything could be selected. But if you zoomed out enough all the ground icons could not be selected or seen (except for the ones you mentioned)
Fixed this issue for me perfectly :( why they removed it is beyond me.

I thought it didnt change selection. So you could not see the units on the ground, but they were still selected?

You might be right. I honestly don't remember now!

I'm not sure what the solution is but I like this thread :)

This wouldn't be so much of an issue if there was a hotkey that selected all orbital units like there is for land/air/naval.

Maybe you could just desaturate them? Doesn't that still show slight differences between colors?

Personally I think the blurred examples are perfect. I think it is just far more important to know who owns something in the background as quickly as possible. If you then want to know what it is you can zoom in again.

I'd much prefer greyed / faded / shrunk, which I'm sure would be both easier to implement and more performant than blurring, and others mentioned, blurring makes the other icons effectively useless so you're spending extra processing power to make something less visible. I can see that it's aesthetically pleasant, but it's really a nice-to-have and Uber have bigger fish to fry for a while.

Personally the issue "I can't make out orbital units and only select them by rotating the planet in weird ways to prevent me from additionally selecting ground units" is the #1 reason why I dislike playing orbital.
