I wonder how cool PA would look like on one of these:

    https://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/

Though I am more looking forward to the standalone 5K screen due to cooling issues I had with my current normal 27" iMac. They need to upgrade the Pro then too though and any other devices that could possibly drive a beast of a screen like that.

This is more of an Off Topic topic.

Not really much point in a 5K screen unless you're a graphic designer or something.

Or you like to see the big explosions in very high resolution.
Or you like to see multiple planets at once (well, when we get multiple camera views)
Or when you play multiple PA games on the same screen (hence, multiple commanders and multiple views).
    ...

Or do you still play at 320x240 as seen at many Quake contests as "it is faster"; this while with higher resolution screens, eg 1280x1024, one could better and quicker see the other player coming around the corner...

How much hardware and software supports 5K?

    Hardware: only that single iMac.

Though there are "PC" video cards that can output it too; would mean you need a screen too though.

Software: anything that can resize the window / maximize-to-the-screen ?

Hence, PA should be able to use it and why I am wondering how that can look like ;)

I'm having doubts that the art assets in PA are 5K. You'll just be stretching 1080p.

If you are talking about pre-rendered things like the videos (which come from youtube.... offline that), then indeed, these will be stretched.

The actual game though, which is what is important should really not care too much about it.

You might be able to not zoom to far, but you will get a really great overview of your planet(s).

    Star Citizen videos are 4K...

That probably means I'll end up buying a 24-inch not-a-Mac one.

    5k? LoL
No GPU can really output in 5k
There is no gain from 4k, unless you are in a huge monitor, something like 45"
Too much computer power being wasted

For me it is another product for the apple fan base so they can scream: OMG 5k from apple! Must have! Soo innovative...

Your game will run at around 3fps.

There will be 2 problems with this:
1: The UI in PA doesn't scale up with high resolution, so all the buttons will be tiny (someone with a 4k monitor already having this issue)
2: The game is slower on Mac than Windows, so despite the good specs on the machine you may be pushing it for playable frame rates on large planets (I may be wrong here though- the GPU at least has a 4gb frame buffer to cope with that number of pixels!).

I don't think it can support it's own resolution. Not to mention that you can't even tell the difference between 5k and 4k.

I'd rather play on my 144Hz 1080p monitor.

Clearly, the "AMD Radeon R9 M290X" can output at 5k.
There is a huge gain for having a very high resolution even on smaller screens: everything is crisper, thus reading a lot of text becomes a lot less painful for a long day. The main reason I have had a 27" non-retina mac for years already, as I primarily use it as a big terminal with lots of screen estate (read: more text, more work that can be overseen).
Yes, there are lots of iTerm2 tabs on my screen.

45" is too big to be sitting close by too btw and doing actual real work.

For PA the extra screen estate and quality of the screen can be quite useful. Hence, for anybody who is scoring one, please do show how that looks like ;)

Does your CPU and GPU run at 100% work load all the time? Are you using an SSD, if you have one, at 100% all the time? Or is your definition of waste something else?

Hmmm, is there another vendor who can sell a 5K screen at that price? As I like tech and I really don't care about the vendor of it as long as it works properly.

As I also noted in the post, I rather have just the screen, aka something like the "Thunderbolt 2 Display", as the computer portion is not easily upgradeable and also puts the heat of the CPU and GPU in the wrong location.

But let me throw a better contender that can not be considered Apple-Fanboy-ish into the "I would love to play PA on this" mix:

Yes, a big fricking wall will do great. PA Touchscreen support anybody? :)

I prefer many screens over one big one in general.

If 3x of whatever screen are reasonable priced and can be used together I'll use them. I don't think 4k or 5k qualify for that so far.
