    ??

    .....how?

it's a 3D planet and solar system, the cursor is 2D and from a 2D plane, where would it be? high in the air on the ground? how does the place it is on his screen somehow correspond to your map? for example where it it placed when it is on the horizon? in space?

You could have a cylinder shape or a circle on every layer (like the area patrol circles) to show the position.

If a teammate has a unit selected, highlight that in a different colour to the player highlight?

Showing the cursor would not be much use as it would be moving too fast to get a lot of use from it.

my point is, logically, half of the time there is no x y and z for where the mouse is pointing.

Then how about a shader on the planet that is determined by their screen. If their fully zoomed out you see a big dim shade over half the planet, if they're zoomed in on a battle you see a nice bright rectangle of their screen

You might be able to get away with something like how orbital has those lines drawing straight down to the planet. wouldn't be exact or show orbital control but if you're playing on one planet who cares?

exactly this and then also the different colour for units they have selected and maybe even ones they've queued up to be built, including units in factories, not just structures

Would be great for game casting too since you know everything everyone is doing
