I prefer neither. Both make the game unplayable. Time dilation is not a fix.

Oh, now you're talking about FAF?

    FA ≠ FAF

Good to know that you're now talking about a different game.

As far as I know, in sup com time dilation is quite good, until you start hitting -3 when time is running at half regular speed. I'm not sure how PA does it, but if done right it's quite nice. This is sadly the result of either poor optimization or extremely intensive calculations, probably a bit of both.

He linked to FAF forums, it's not that hard to figure out which version he's talking about.

It's not as though they're saying that "time dilation is our fix to server lag" they're planning to continue to optimise, time dilation is a fallback measure, and objectively a superior fallback measure to stutter

Strategic zoom is something I definitely can't live without. I tried playing a childhood favorite of mine, Red Alert 2, and it felt really claustrophobic.

Except I was talking about FA, and he was saying FA, but meaning FAF.

Even then, it still doesn't magically make my argument invalid because I was talking about FA, AND FAF is a mashup of community made mods.

Don't point to a different game to somehow make what I'm saying invalid.

Ok you were talking about FA, that's fine. Maybe you should play FAF, it has a lot of fixes, better balance and is constantly updated, i'm sure you'll enjoy it :)

Oh and it will be getting that beloved area command implemented in the next patch.

I'm sorry but FA and FAF are pretty much the same. The fact that you're complaining about features in FA (which have been updated and fixed in FAF) is like playing PA Alpha and complaining that there is bad performance. They're the same project, just continued on, in FA's case, by a different developing body.

Your premise that 'I can't play any RTS games because of how AMAZING™ PA is' is silly because you can just play FAF, which has an active community, has patches etc.

So I'm talking globally about how awesome PA's area commands are and how just about no other RTS game has that... and that doesn't count since one other modded game has it. Got it.

I guess other games missing area commands (like AoE, C&C, Ruse, and a handful of other RTS games I've dabbled with recently) doesn't matter since FAF has area commands. Got it.

I love how that was in Supcom as well and would, in fact, happen quite early due to being based on peer to peer connections. Especially when it was first released as you needed a good computer to run it.

Yep, and that's why allowing modding in games is excellent, you allow for the expansion and free coding for your game.

Not to mention- what have people said before about PA? Oh that's right, you shouldn't have to get 3rd party material (aka mods) to make the game better. So similarly... Faf isn't a continuation of the game that can really be considered, it's just a really complex mod. It'd be like rating Minecraft based on the Tekkit or FTB mod packs.

I personally have never said that, and saying FAF can't be considered because it's "3rd party" is a pretty stubborn look at it. I personally feel that mods make both PA and FA much better, but the base game should still be good, and full of working features. When I play FA on steam it's playing a very different game due to the lack of updates that FAF has brought, similarly I can see where people come from when comparing PA with and without mods. I personally have not used many PA mods but I can guess for the 2 years this game has been developed, there are probably plenty of mods that expand on it quite nicely.

PA has area commands because it needs them, without them, everyone would be struggling to play this game. Stop trying to religiously defend PA as a great game because of area commands - it's a good game because of other reasons. There are no area commands in AoE because you're using 20-50 units at once tops. There is no concept of flanking, micro or anything. It's just a tactical game. Not strategy. You can just blob a few units and you are a-okay.

"I can't play this RTS because it doesn't have a feature in a completely different RTS, which would be useless in this game, but I just can't play just cause I love PA so so much. Age of Empires, why aren't you like PA? God."

Ok, as long as they aren't calling it a fix.

When have I said that PA is a great game because of area commands?

You're reading things that I'm not saying.

I'm simply saying that trying to play other RTS games without area commands is frustrating. Area Commands are an excellent feature that I really like about PA.

All RTS games could benefit from area commands. Some games need them more than others, but all RTS games could be improved by PA.

And religiously defending PA? You must not read much of what I write, because I'm writing regularly about all of the shortcomings of PA and how it should not have been released in its current state.

Oy, it's really annoying to have people tell me that I'm religiously defending PA and that PA can do no wrong, while other people are telling me that I'm the reason PA will fail because I'm saying bad things about PA. Come on people, pick one. I can't be religiously defending PA and causing PA to fail because I criticize the game.

Taxman, you are reading way into what I'm saying and reading things I'm not saying. I'm simply saying that area commands are AWESOME and other RTS games should have them.

    nope

It's usefulness is map dependant, and as a result does not fit in with 'all RTS games'.
