As I've played this game I really don't care for any of the commander options available to me and I thought it'd be cool to have a system similar to Halo or Armored Core where you can change some of the aesthetics of your armor or whatever it may be to suit your tastes. I realize that there were some custom commanders made for backers and this probably would never be a thing due to that but I think it'd be pretty cool if everyone had the ability to tweak a commander to their tastes instead of these boring choices that are available at the moment. This might be a small thing but aesthetic features can go a long way for some folks. I've probably spent tons of time just sitting around in AC customizing my own mecha and I always thought it was super cool. What do you scrublords think?

Awesome idea in principle. However, for a game of this size, I personally wouldn't get any satisfaction from tweaking my commander. I'd be all "Yeah, he looks mad! COWER, MINIONS!" and then I'd take him to the battlefield, and... lose him. In my giant army of vanilla tanks and bots. Across two worlds. ****, he's dead.

Given the way the game works, I reckon selecting the best option you have for a Commander is where it should be at.

Nifty idea, but would require a ton of work and the introduction of a bunch of new mechanics to obtain points to buy the stuff.

Doesn't seem to quite fit PA.

Considering your commander is a sentient robot which is basically you I honestly think it'd fit in pretty well in multiplayer/GW. "Hey I'm an individual but I look exactly like everyone else!" I think it could work.

    1000$ backers might be a tad bit miffed ^^;

    Edit: Oops, I meant 1k not 1000k ;)

That's why I pointed that out in my post. It probably wouldn't happen. Although if they were to make a custom commander system they could give the backers unique options. Kind of like dev only type stuff. e.g. Recon from Halo 3.

It could work, but is the effort required worthwhile?

Not to mention that if Modding ever takes off it's entirely possible you could still get a "Personal" commander for something like Galactic War.

What I want is more difference between the commanders. Speed, attack power, build speed, energy and metal production, maybe even more types of special weapons like the uber cannon

Well I wouldn't only want a commander for GW. I mostly play multiplayer so having my own commander and sticking out in the ocean of bland would be cool to me.
I honestly feel like this would be cool, kind of like heroes from a moba but balancing all that would definitely be a hassle. Something like this could add the whole "factions" type thing that I've been wanting for so long without changing the units at all(besides the commander of course).

Back in ye olde times of development someone came up with the idea of a client side commanders mod. Where players could make custom commanders and use them, they'd also upload it to a storage basically, and anyone else using this mod will see your commander by downloading it from said storage.

As innovative and clever as it is evil.

I have an idea for this system that should still be fine with the $1000 backers.
My idea is that Uber would give us a system where the comm model is divided into seperate parts (Body, Head, L arm, R arm and legs). The idea is that you would be able to switch out any of these parts with that of another commander which you already own. So if you want to create a comm using some parts present on one of the backer commanders, you would have to purchase the backers commander first, then you'll be able to use any part present on that comm and mix and match with parts from other comms you own.

I'm not talking about the concept. Of course the idea in it's broadest sense fits.

But, the additional other stuff doesn't quite fit. The more you examine the details, the less it fits. You'd need to introduce a point system somehow that is balanced. One so a small 1v1 match is scored fairly alongside a 2 hour multi planet 10 way FFA.

In Halo it was simple. Get a kill, get points. That doesn't translate hardly at all to PA.

And that's where this idea starts to fall apart.

What do you mean by points? I'm baffled as to how points are related to customizable armor.

This is exactly what I'd love to see in this game.

The Halo system was brought up as an example. In the Halo system you level up and acquire points to buy the different pieces to assemble your Spartan.

So not only are there different pieces with different levels of coolness, but some armor pieces actually have merit to them because it takes a lot of time and skill to get the amount of points required to unlock the armor piece.

Well I didn't really mean to imply any sort of leveling system. Although it might add longevity to the game I'm not really a big fan of it unless it's a skill/ladder based system. I think an achievement system would work better than leveling. Something like "win x number of times online" or something like that to unlock more or specific parts.
